World Malaria Day falls on April 25 each year.
In 2007, this special day was established by the 60th session of the World Health Organization, a WHO decision-making body. World Malaria Day was established to educate people and make them understand the disease. The day was formerly known as African Malaria Day, however, in 2007, the WHO recognized the disease as a global epidemic. The day also gives international companies, partners and foundations the opportunity to work together to eradicate the disease.
On April 25 every year, Ghana joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Malaria Day (WMD), a day set aside to highlight the need for continued investment and a strong political commitment to prevent and control the disease.
The day, established by the Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) during the 2007 World Health Assembly, was also marked to highlight the success of the fight against malaria, as well as individual responsibilities to eradicate malaria and ensure a world free of malaria.
Studies show that over the past two decades, the world has made great strides in the fight against malaria, saving more than seven million lives and protecting more than a billion people from malaria.
