So it is important to maintain vata dosha in body during winter to prevent joint pain.

Ayurveda experts suggests some points for treatment of joint Pain or to prevent it as mentioned below.

management of joint Pain :

We'll manage it in 2 ways:
  1. By changing in our daily routine or lifestyle
  2. By medicinal herbs / diet

1. Exercise, yoga & stretching :

Regular exercise and stretching will give your joints flexibility and fluidity and strengthens your joint muscles.

Some yogas for joint pain:
  • Marjariasana (cat pose)
  • Balasana (Child pose)
  • Gomukhasana (Cow face pose) are known to keep the joints flexible.
However, these asanas should not be done when you are experiencing pain.

2. Warm Poultice massage :

Warm poultice treatment massages are helpful in promoting muscle and joint relaxation. Poultices, known as Potalis can be prepared at home and used for frozen shoulders, spondylitis pain, arthritis and all kinds of joint and muscular pains.

How to prepare it?
  • In a clean muslin or cotton cloth, pack 1 cup rice powder, 3 tablespoons grated fresh ginger, 1 teaspoon cardamom powder, 1 teaspoon of clove powder and 1 teaspoon rock salt.
  • Tie it into a pouch.
  • Take a cup of sesame oil and mildly heat in a pan.
  • Dip the pouch in warm oil. Check the warmth of the potali and apply gently on the joints.
  • This will relax the muscles around the joint, promote blood circulation and provide amazing pain relief.

3. Daily joint rotations :

Include daily joint rotations in your workout routine along with some low impact exercises like cycling and swimming.

It will help you ease the joint pain and prevent worsening of the condition.

Additionally, walking can also prove to be helpful, but make sure you don't walk too fast and wear comfortable shoes that are relatively flat.

4. Practice Abhangya

(not recommended to do any kind of treatment at home.)
It is a form of full body massage with medicinal oils. This therapy helps reduce vata dosha and mobilises the toxins from tissues.

To give yourself a proper massage, heat approximately one cup of organic sesame oil and apply on the entire body from scalp to toes.

Massage using vigorous long strokes for at least 10 minutes each day. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, do not practice Abhyanga.

5. Proper diet :

Maintaining a balanced diet is essential to managing joint pain. Consumption of grains like "raktashali" and "shasthika" lower the inflammation. Veggies and fruits like karela (Bitter Gourd), brinjal, neem and drumsticks are recommended along with berries and avocados.

Living with joint pain can be very difficult, especially if you''re getting on in age. While it''s possible to find short term relief by following the outlined tips, long term treatment of the condition will need professional intervention.

6. Include ghee in your diet :

In ayurveda ghee is considered as a kapha vardhaka aahara which balances the increased vata dosha in body.

Sleshaka Kapha (synovial fluid) resides between bone joints and helps in the smooth movement of limbs.

Kapha is responsible for maintaining tissues, body fluids, lubrication, flexibility and firmness in the body.

These are important for the proper functioning of the joints and hence it is important to include more Kapha balancing foods, especially in winter.

Okra (bhindi), sprouts, pumpkin seeds, spinach and black beans can also help in restoring Sleshaka Kapha in the body and facilitate painless movement of the joints.

7. Fenugreek seeds (Methi) :

Fenugreek is a high-grade antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, making it a preferred choice for joint pain treatment.

Swallow one medium-sized teaspoon of fenugreek powder mixed with honey and drink a glass of lukewarm water with it. Don t gulp down the entire glass in one go! Take slow sips.

Soon enough, you'll notice a difference in the severity of pain you re experiencing.

Living with joint pain can be very difficult, especially if you re getting on in age.

If you ve been experiencing joint pain for a while, we d advise you not to ignore it.

Make sure you see a doctor at the first signs of joint pain so that the problem can be nipped in the bud.
